At The Himachal Dental located in Shimla,  we pride ourselves in the fact that we combine High technology with High touch.  Our team of dental professionals aim to make your visit to our dental office in Shimla Twp. the most positive experience at a dental office as possible.  With a light hearted, compassionate environment many of our dental patients say what a great place this is to even visit.

How then do we incorporate our dental technology with the gentle touch?  That is easy-We use the technology as a tool and not an excuse to ignore our dental patients.

The following are examples how we use technology at our dental office :

* We are a paperless dental office so this means that any forms are sent to you online to be filled out in the privacy of your own home so that when you arrive at the dental office  you will only need to review the information you filled out and sign off on our tablet PC.  This is convenient when you have the time and have access to your medical and dental information.
* Digital x rays and panoramic x rays.  With the use of digital x rays your exposure to radiation is decreased by 50-60%.  The image appears on our screen within 4 seconds of exposure.  If a different view is needed there is no need to wait which is common with x ray film. This also makes us a “green dental office” since there are no harmful chemicals disposed of and used.
* Electric dental hand pieces are used for precise control of the drill and is quieter than the air driven drills used by many dentists in the Shimla area.
* Digital photos of both your smile and mouth make communication and understanding much easier which take the guess work out of it.  These can also be emailed to you for your own use.
* Computer based educational systems are used to allow you the dental patient to have a better understanding of the procedures that are recommended to you.

These are only a few of the unique high technology tools we use for our dental patients in the Shimla Township.  For more information please visit our website at www.himachaldental.com or call 177-6450704.

Green & Mercury-Free Dentistry

Over the last few years, Dental Clinics have instituted various action plans to make dental offices more eco-friendly. With so much public awareness about the Green Movement recently.During the last decades, public awareness and professional accountability on environmental issues has been increasing steadily as human activities have already resulted in irreversible global changes.

* We have replaced incandescent lights with florescent lighting, which is five times more efficient.
* We have fully integrated comprehensive practice management software, which stores all of our patient records. This means no more wasting paper in order to produce paper charts and records.
* All of our computers, faxes, copy machines, and printers are Energy Star rated, meaning they run cooler and save on energy.
* We recycle all paper, cardboard, plastic, and glass, and we use recycled/remanufactured ink for our printers.
* We have digital radiography, which means no more film processing with harsh chemicals. It also uses less radiation than a traditional X-ray system.
* We have a CAD/CAM milling machine which reduces material use, as well as fuel consumption by both lab and patient.
* We use less water with our motion sensor sprays used to disinfect our hands.
* We use biodegradable, non-toxic cleaners.
* We consolidate our supply orders to save packaging and fuel consumption.
* We use an autoclave cassette system rather than paper and plastic bags for most instrument sterilization.
* We use an oil free air compressor and oil free vacuum system.
* Our office is mercury-free

Most importantly, we do not place mercury-based amalgam fillings in our patients’ mouths. We have an amalgam/mercury separator in our vacuum system which filters out the discharge of the harmful element mercury from the filling material that we remove from patients’ teeth.

The discharge of mercury filling material into municipal sewage systems has been implicated in contributing to elevated levels of mercury in our lakes and rivers. Dental offices nationwide, it has been estimated, have contributed 40-50% of the mercury found in waste water. Several countries have banned dental mercury based fillings for this reason. In addition, the FDA has become more involved in addressing health concerns from these mercury-silver fillings in people’s mouths and has reclassified the material. All mercury based filling material is also classified as hazardous waste by the EPA when it is removed from a person’s teeth. Any scrap must be disposed of in a hazardous waste container.

Our main goal is to inform the dental community on contemporory literature on dental waste production and disposal, but most of all to sensitize all those involved in dental education for actions that will lead to an environmentally responsible dental practice. If you have any questions about green dentistry or mercury-free dentistry, don’t hesitate to call us. We’re happy to share information about our technology and procedures.
